Live in Illinois: Hemp applications now open

Throughout his campaign trail, Gov. J.B. Pritzker often cited the potential economic and agricultural benefits a robust hemp industry could offer voters in Illinois. On Tuesday morning, Pritzker reiterated the potential benefits while announcing the opening of hemp applications.

“Industrial hemp is a potentially-billion-dollar-a-year industry that Illinois will now take part in, from farming and processing to sales and exports, this will have a massive impact on our state’s economy,” said Pritzker during an early-morning Statehouse news conference

Farmers in Illinois can now apply for a cultivation license or register as a processor, either as a business or an individual. Applicants will be subject to an online $100 application fee and a yearly license fee of $375, with the option to purchase a 3-year license for $1,000.

With approachable entry costs, the state could soon welcome heaps of new entrepreneurs interested in the cultivation and processing of hemp, opening up the possibility to securing more cannabinoid-based research here in Illinois.
